I’m James Whalen. I’m bringing a new generation to our courts.

Here and across the country, politicians are bending and breaking rules to take more power for themselves at our expense—and our current court majorities have allowed abuses of power to go unchecked.

I’ve protected our rights in Josh Stein’s Department of Justice and private practice. Most recently, I helped ensure every vote counted in Justice Allison Riggs’ Supreme Court race. Now, I’m running for the North Carolina Court of Appeals to stop the abuses of power, uphold our rights, and build a brighter future for our state.

Who am I?

Originally from Charlotte, I now live in Raleigh with my wife Anna, son Cab, dog Sherlock, and cat Clue. I come from a big family of public servants with deep North Carolina roots. The question in my family was never if we’d serve, but how we’d use our talents to make the world better for the next generation. I found my voice early on as a defender of fundamental rights and the rule of law. I focus my law practice on appellate cases and democratic causes. I’ve fought gerrymandering, defended our right to vote (and have that vote count), and more in our state and federal appellate courts. Now, I’m eager to use those skills to uphold our rights as a judge.

Support our efforts.

Running a statewide campaign takes lots of resources and teamwork, and reforming our courts will require a new generation of judges dedicated to the rule of law and passionate for justice. This years-long project cannot wait. We must start now. In this statewide election, I’ll need everyone’s support. I hope you will join me and become a founding, grassroots supporter of my campaign.
